Why do I bring my Argan oil with me when I travel and especially to Morocco?

Why do I bring my Argan oil with me when I travel and especially to Morocco where it is widely available?

We all know by now that Argan oil or Moroccan oil is only sourced in Morocco. It is an oil that is produced from Argan nuts that grow only in the southern part of Morocco.

When you travel to Morocco you can see it everywhere and with its increased popularity this last decade worldwide, everybody got into producing and selling Argan oil in Morocco. Unfortunately not all products on the market are regulated which makes it difficult for you buyers to differentiate between good Argan oi, chemically processed and even fake ones.

How can you be sure you are buying pure, authentic, unadulterated, and unrefined Moroccan Argan oil?

That was my main mission when I decided to launch KENZA International Beauty. Those were my worries. How can I be sure to provide only the highest quality, 100% Pure and organic Moroccan Argan oil?

Being native from this country, knowing so well the behind the scenes of the Argan oil business led me to search for the only supplier that can guarantee the highest quality with not only laboratory tests analyses but also certifications like USDA organic and most importantly ISO9001 international quality certification.

Most production of Argan oil in Morocco is organic and has been handcrafted by Berber women at cooperatives for centuries.

How Moroccan Argan oil is produced is one question to ask but the main concern to have is how is it processed, what production requirements does it go through, how is it packaged and what are the procedures implicated to guarantee the quality of the final product?

This is why I found a supplier in Morocco, and one of the few here that is ISO9001 certified.
Every batch that enters the manufacture goes first to be tested for authenticity and quality. Every batch no matter how long they have been working with the cooperatives supplying them.

At KENZA International Beauty we offer two organic Moroccan oils: Argan oil and Prickly Pear Seed Oil that go through the extensive regulated process from production, packaging to shipping to guarantee that you are only using the highest quality products.

WHAT IS ARGAN OIL or MOROCCAN ARGAN OIL?

Argan oil, one of the oldest beauty treasures from Morocco, is a multi-purpose natural beauty care product that will enhance your beauty life. This natural wonder oil, used by Moroccan women for centuries, is derived from the fruit of the Argan (Argania Spinosa) tree in the Southwest of Morocco. The Argan tree can live up to 200 years in a dry arid region and produces an oval-shape green and yellow fruit. A single tree yields 8-13 lbs. of Argan fruit per harvest while each fruit contains 2-3 kernels. Almost 7 lbs. of kernel are required to produce about 34 fl.oz. of Pure Argan Oil.

What is Argan Oil?
The production of Argan oil is a labor intensive process that involves manual handling by Moroccan women at cooperatives. After the nuts are collected, they are cracked open by hand with a stone to obtain the kernels which are then machine cold pressed to extract the precious Argan oil. It takes up to 20 hours to produce about 34 fl.oz of Argan Oil.

Composition & Benefits

Argan oil contains approximately twice as much Tocopherols (Vitamin E) than Olive Oil*.

“Tocopherols are molecules with strong anti-oxidant and free radical scavenging properties. gamma-Tocopherols, the most efficient free radical scavenger of all tocopherols, composes 69 percent of argan oil total tocopherols content”**

Its high level of essential fatty acids – Oleic (Omega 9) and Linoleic (Omega 6) – associated to powerful antioxidants (such as Tocopherols and Polyphenols) makes this natural beauty oil an essential element for moisturizing, treating, nourishing, conditioning, and protecting your skin, hair, cuticles, and nails.

KENZA Pure Argan Oil is a potent non-greasy treatment that is easily absorbed by the skin. Among its many natural benefits,

– conditions the skin hydro-lipid layer and locks in moisture
– improves skin elasticity
– treats scars, stretch marks, minor bugs bites, and rashes
– helps to heal acne and blemishes
– softens and strengthens nails and cuticles
– nourishes and conditions hair and prevents split ends

Moroccan Argan oil and social change for women

Argan Oil: A Moroccan Craft

My fourth annual visit to the women coop in Arazane

In late September, I traveled to Morocco to visit the Tirizite cooperative in Arazane for the fourth time in as many years. In addition to my support of the New York Women’s Foundation and of Turning Point for Women and Families, I try to help the cooperative Tirizite as much as I can as part of the KENZA International Beauty socially responsible mission.

After an 8hr bus ride from Casablanca to Agadir and another 2hr car drive, I arrived at Arazane. As soon as I pulled into the parking lot of Latifa’s house, I could hear the women singing a welcoming song in their Berber language. It brought tears to my eyes and warmed my heart.

Every year the coop makes some progress. Latifa, the coop Director, informed me the coop has joined a union of cooperatives in the Taroudant area (this will allow it to pool some resources, to share best practices, and to have a stronger market presence); has been certified NormaCert which guarantees the Argan oil origin and quality; successfully underwent an inspection by the Moroccan Department of Health; and it will be showcased in a fair in Germany representing Moroccan products. These are all great news but have expenses attached.

On the other hand, new challenges always arise. I also learned the women had not been working for some time because the coop had run out of Argan nuts and it could not afford to buy any more. Therefore, this year KENZA International Beauty donated the coop a lump sum to buy about 3,000 lb. of Argan nuts and to cover other expenses. This aid helps the coop provide jobs for the women so that they can be more productive and financially independent.

My assistant and I spent the day with the women to learn more about their work and responsibilities at the cooperative. Here are two videos that we hope you will enjoy and see how the Argan oil process is not as easy as it seems. We value the hard work of all the women working in cooperatives in Morocco producing many products that we all love.

We are grateful for your continuous support, for being loyal to our brand: KENZA“be generously beautiful”™ and for allowing us to spread more LOVE-BEAUTY-GENEROSITY

A Social Enterprise shares the generous beauty of Argan oil

In October, I returned to Arazane, Morocco for the annual contribution that KENZA International Beauty makes to the Tirizite women cooperative that produces the KENZA Pure Argan oil. Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMwtGwkFLRc

Upon arrival, I found out the coop had run out of Argan nuts and unable to produce Argan oil for the last two weeks, that the price of Argan nuts had doubled because of a recent drought, and that the coop had an outstanding bill from its last purchase of Argan nuts during the summer. Although the supplier had delivered the previous Argan nuts order on credit, he now needed to be paid in full before delivering any more Argan nuts.

This is when I decided that paying the coop outstanding debt and the cost of the new Argan nut order was a better way for my social enterprise to help the women cooperative rather than just distributing cash to them. This way, the coop was able to purchase 4,464 lbs. of Argan nuts that the women will use to produce about 18 gallons of pure Argan oil (both the edible and the cosmetic kind) and be debt free.

I was also pleasantly surprised by a few other developments at the coop:

– A very nice playground was built for the children community of Arazane on the coop grounds by “1040i for Humanity”, an American non-profit organization from Oklahoma. This playground is a wonderful facility for the local community as it is rare to see playing areas designated for children in Morocco.(Read more here)

– The women coop has a new building with reception area, shop, office, production lab, classroom, and a working room where the women crack the Argan nuts.

– The women coop has expanded its product line to include whole wheat and semolina couscous, exfoliating masks made out of Argan kernels, black soap with orange blossoms essential oil, and other beauty products.

Something that is in great need at the coop is an on-site day care for the pre-school children of the coop women. The daycare would allow these children to play, learn, and socialize with other kids instead of spending their day watching their moms crack the Argan nuts. I will focus on this project next with the help of all my “beautiful friends”.
